Chapter One: Some Strange Melody
He was a layabout without aspiration orpurpose,
content to loiter on street corners languidlybusking for passersby.
Roughly ushered from the bustlingcommercial blocks,
he wandered the forgotten corners of thecity.
An intoxicating melody drifted over anearby cemetery wall,
and he stumbled deliriously amongst thetombstones in search of the performer...
Chapter Two: Music of the Night
He could learn this unearthly hymn... andclaim it as his own!
Ambition, so long dormant within him, hadbeen roused.
He delighted in fantasies of fame,renown... and respect.
Chapter Three: Play to the Crowd
When word of his uncommon talent reachedthe palace,
he was summoned to entertain King andCourt.
Anticipating an historic performance andenthused adulation,
he was stunned to find himself instead theobject of their debased ridicule.
While his noble audience dined drunkenly,he was mocked, tortured,
and subjected to an obscene array ofdangerous and decadent humiliations...
Chapter Four: A Dark Song
He unleashed his resentment upon instrumentand crowd,
playing the demoniac melody with unrestrainedfury!
This was the song of the dead - and it hadexacted a fitting tribute.
Chapter Five: Finale
Bowing low, he basked in the echoingapplause of dripping blood.
The scene of wholesale dismemberment drovehim to fits of mirthless hysterics.
He was laughing still as he placed theblade against his own hand,
severing his connection to whatever twistedtalent he had so fleetingly enjoyed.
Aimlessly, he drifted from the hall,
humming broken bars of a discordant melodyhe could not quite remember...
That accursed melody was a trap beyond allcunning.
That song found ambition buried dead in myheart and made it dance...
And so the trap snapped shut on me.
Just as it was meant to, the song loosedthe leash of my inhibitions...
Ask any animal if it was worth it to gnawoff a limb for freedom.
I am stronger for having relived my past.
