Wolf V079, who we re-collared on Saturday, is a good example of what happens to a wolf’s teeth when they reach old age. Wolf V079 is a ~9-10 year old wolf who is the breeding male of the Moonshadow Pack.
As you can see in the photos below, V079 is missing several teeth, his canines are worn down to nubs (one canine was broken off entirely), and his incisors are worn down as well.
His large carnassial teeth (his big molars) in the back of his mouth are considerably worn but are actually in better shape than the rest of his teeth.
Wolves are tough on their teeth because their teeth/mouths are their primary tool to take prey down and because wolves crunch on large bones from kills. Crunching on bones causes tooth wear whereas trying to take down prey with their mouth can lead to broken teeth or losing teeth all together.
Wolves that truly reach old old age will eventually starve to death, in part, because they don’t have any teeth to catch and consume prey with. That said, it is kind of astounding that wolves like Wolf V079 who are in poor ‘dental” condition are able to kill prey at all.
