The Prince of Wales himself has complained that the Royal Family are seen by some as little more than a "soap opera". Now one of Britain's most famous (and republican) authors has condemned the Windsors to a far worse fate, portraying the family as down and almost certainly out.
However, there is one aspect of the latest 'royal' book which would delight the future King Charles: the promotion of his "darling wife" to Queen Camilla.
Famous for her series of books documenting the often traumatic teenage years of Adrian Mole, in recent years Sue Townsend has turned her attentions to the Royal Family, stripping away the glamour of the monarchy, instead portraying the family as 'real' people facing all-too 'real' problems.
