Let’s continue the story from last time.
“Hey! What do you think you are doing?” the chairman angrily fired.
We stood there. Frozen. Terrified. We were in BIG trouble.
“I am sorry sir…we were just…”
“Who are you?” he interrupted “How did you get in here?”
At that point I could hear my dad approaching. He had heard noise and was coming to see what was going on.
The chairman’s face relaxed when he recognized my dad. I felt a sense of relief.
“Are these your kids?”
“Yes sir, so sorry for the trouble, I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again”
We quickly got out of the office, followed my dad to his desk. He was mad at us. He was embarrassed. He didn’t say anything until we exited the building.
On the way back home, I was sitting with Terry in the back seat of my dad’s blue Chevrolet.
“Why did you go to his office? I told you not to touch anything!“ my Dad asked
“We just wanted to look at the watch. It was so beautiful and…”
“That watch is worth more than our car!” he replied.
That sentence shocked me. I kept hearing it in my head the rest of the drive home: “Worth more than our car? How can it be? It’s impossible. It’s just a watch…”
Many years later, when I was in that fancy jewelry store near campus, I remembered the feeling I had in the car.
As if there was a glass wall separating normal people and wealthy people. As if nice things were for wealthy people only. As if the rest of us had to satisfy ourselves with cheap things.
It didn’t sit well with me.
I didn’t realize it right away, but these events planted the seeds that led to Terry and I starting Rossling & Co. a little later (I’ll tell you everything about it in a few days).
We decided that we wanted to make high quality, beautifully-crafted luxury, watches available for everyone, not just the elite, the 1%.
And that is what we did.
With Rossling & Co. you will get a limited-edition luxury watch with a Swiss movement, a watch that would traditionally retail for up to $700-900in a fancy jewelry store…for under $150.
We are able to do this by completely cutting out all those middlemen and outrageous mark-ups.
Now, this makes a lot more sense.
