Belgium started games in a 4-4-1-1 formation, but changed into a 4-4-2 in certain situations during play. At the back, the Belgians were very compact and combined the benefits of zonal defence and man-marking.
The most advanced opponent was always picked up by the defender responsible for that particular zone. Belgium always attempted to surround the ball with men, whilst also affording their defence sufficient cover. The players were hard but fair in the tackle and no player on the pitch was released from defensive duties.
Belgium had good variation in attacks, which usually started in the midfield. Verheyen, an orthodox striker, and the slightly deeper Wilmots were able to create space for each other and for their advancing midfield team-mates. The team exerted a lot of pressure down the wings, and Mpenza against Brazil in particular was able to get behind the defence by making excellent use of his speed and trickery. Goor, on the left, and Walem, a central midfielder, were also highly effective when pushing forward in support of their team-mates. If they fell behind, Belgium invariably opted to introduce a second striker (Sonck), with Verheyen adopting a new role on the right, allowing Wilmots to push forward into a central attacking role. Against Brazil, Mpenza operated in a slightly more defensive wing role in an attempt to neutralise the threat posed by Brazilian substitute Denilson.
Belgium can take heart from their performances, as the players displayed great unity, tactical discipline, and a willingness to run and fight for possession. However, poor finishing ultimately cost the team a place in the quarter-finals.
