The build up to the big day had been equally as exciting with Paul and the guys visiting the stadium twice for rehearsals. I can only describe the stadium and village as totally mega - it was literally buzzing. From the moment you could see the outline of the Olympic village in the distance, it was like being in a film. Already you could get the sense of just what a massive spectacle it was all going to be. Looking around the venue you could see all kinds of props suspended from the roof. Paul’s stage area was actually situated underneath (here comes the fact of the day) the fourth largest bell in the world, which you will have noticed on TV.

On the day of Paul’s first rehearsal in the sweltering heat, he treated stadium staff to a private gig. Venue workers couldn’t believe it as they formed an impromptu mosh-pit in front of Paul for the stadium’s first ever rock concert. It was quite a sight to behold as line managers and security staff did their best to get workers back to their posts while Paul rocked through classics including ‘1985’, ‘Let Me Roll It’, ‘Drive My Car’ and ‘My Valentine’. Eventually the line managers gave up and joined in too. I was watching while chatting to some producers from the US network NBC. They told me they felt like they could go home happy now after watching this and that they were getting goose bumps just from the jam session. I also spent a lot of time clearing excited unofficial photographers from rehearsals who had somehow managed to get in. I suppose given that there were more than 500 officially accredited photographers for the opening spectacular, the odd few were bound to slip through the net.
In the week leading up to the event, Paul appeared on the cover of the UK’s prestigious Shortlist magazine for their Olympic special issue. Given all the Olympic icons out there, the editorial team was adamant that Paul should be their cover star. The magazine was set to get their biggest ever circulation as the world arrived in the UK ahead of the games.
As the day of the opening ceremony arrived, Paul’s team arrived on site in the afternoon to get themselves ready for their own epic evening ahead of them. Paul’s green room area was situated a good 30 minute walk from the stadium itself so we spent a lot of the day on our feet, getting a lot of exercise moving between meetings within the stadium and back to our green room base. An hour or so before the ceremony officially started and before our main man arrived, a busload of Paul’s friends and family arrived at the green room area, all onsite to show their support for a very special and unique moment in a career that has seen an impossible number of impressive accolades and events. Just moments later, Paul and Nancy arrived.
At 8:45pm, Paul – full of jokes and friendliness - jumped on the bus with everyone to be taken to their seats for the opening ceremony. It felt like a school trip with a mischievous McCartney who was showing no sign of nerves even though he was about to perform to billions around the globe!
When the bus pulled up to the stadium, Paul got off with his friends and joined the masses as they all made their way to their seats. As Paul made his way through the crowds, people were double taking, not quite sure if they believed what they had just seen. ‘I think that was Macca,’ I overheard a young woman say to the man she was with. ‘Don’t be silly,’ came the reply, ‘he’s hardly going to be taking a seat in the stadium, let alone walking through the crowds to get there.’ But she was right, it was Macca. Paul and the guys kept moving just fast enough to avoid any chance of him being totally mobbed but there was still time for a lot of people to be left open-mouthed and very confused.
At 9PM, the ceremony got under way and just after 10PM, Paul and the band left their seats in the stadium to return to the green room to get ready. They had a makeshift rehearsal room set up, similar to the Mexico City Hotel pre-gig jam. Just before midnight, Paul made his way back to the stadium once again but this time as a performer and not a spectator. Paul was in high spirits, posing for some pictures for Twitter and drinking in the incredible atmosphere along with the rest of the crew. Then before we knew it, it was time for Paul to take to his piano stool and start up with ‘The End’ before leading the stadium (and viewers everywhere) in a massive sing-a-long. It was incredible. Being stood by the side of stage, it was incredible hearing all those voices coming from the audience. What a rush!

D.J.mbenga,pavel podkolzin,josh powell,rawle marshall ,pops mensah-bonsu,j.j. barea,nock fazekas.

Finally, I would like to pay tribute to the men and women of the Mountain Rescue teams who work tirelessly to rescue those in need. Although they are contactable through the Police on the 999/112 emergency services number, they are unpaid volunteers who risk life and limb. Please click the blue writing to see the website for the team for the area I spend time is here they do take donations and you can read their incident reports:
* Advice: Walking by yourself can be liberating. Do however take good care of yourself, and have maps, compass, spare clothing, food, drinks, and a torch. Walk within your capability and know both the weather forecast and the sunset times. Don’t rely on technology as your only means of rescue. Leave details of your route with someone with an estimated time of return, and make sure you don’t forget to call them to advise of your safe return. Many unnecessary callouts are as a result of the walkers sat in a pub blissfully unaware that they haven’t called in!

On arrival after an examination by the emergency centre registrar, I was informed that what I had was actually cellulitis, a severe skin infection that could, if left untreated lead to septicaemia, or blood poisoning.   This quite shocked me.   They told me that I would need to be put on an intravenous drip to have some antibiotics given to me.   I feared that after going so far to perform at the concert that I would then let everyone down by not being able to make it to the concert, as the medical team was seriously contemplating admitting me for three days.   It all depended on me being able to take the drugs intravenously.
I knew that this would not be uncomplicated, as I tend to be a bit like a pin cushion as far as needles go.   I’m not scared of them in the slightest, it’s just that my veins tend to be terrified of them and go into hiding!   When I was in hospital having a 4 inch tumour removed the nightly blood test round would be a battle of wits with my veins.   When I was knocked from my bicycle 4 months later, the ambulance technician was unable to find a vein to give me pain relief for my severely fractured collar-bone so gave me nitrus oxide (laughing gas) which left me feeling drunk, a feeling I hate, so I refused it and just gritted my teeth.
The charge nurse Carole tried valiantly to find a vein but was unable to persuade any to be stabbed.   After an hour of trying, me making it to the concert was looking more and more unlikely.   Along came a friendly charge nurse from the intensive care unit who is used to finding unwilling veins, and after a few goes he managed to find one and within 30 minutes I was allowed to go to the concert.   On leaving, he thanked me for coming to New Zealand to perform for Christchurch as he had lost his mum in the CTV building (it was his first day back at work).   I made it to the venue just before the concert was about to start, much to the relief of Elizabeth, and myself.
I told the story of my hospital visit to the audience and dedicated my performance of Nessun Dorma to the staff of North Shore hospital and in particular to the charge nurse from ICU and his mum.   I enjoyed my performance immensely, and it was great to sing with Elizabeth again.   We had a fantastic response from the audience at the Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna.   So far about NZ$ 120,000 has been raised for New Zealand Red Cross, and it is a testament to Elizabeth’s hard work that such a great event was organised in only 5 weeks.
I would like to pay tribute to so many people not just to those involved in the concert.   There are workmen working 16 hours a day knee deep in raw sewage to keep the electricity flowing.   So many people are working flat out to make sure that people in the area have the minimum services to live a civilised life.   they continue to work through after shocks.
I was looked after very well the whole time I was in New Zealand, and I would like to thank Seeby Woodhouse for allowing me to steal his master bedroom, his business manager, Karen for looking after me and to everyone in New Zealand for giving me such a warm warm welcome into their beautiful country.   It is always a pleasure to come, and I always find I never have enough time there.
Tika Hoki, Aotearoa!

This was my first proper go at a panoramic shot. I used a Pentax DFA 55mm lens at f/16. It took quite some time as the Lake District is pretty busy at the moment and had to find times when people weren't walking on one of the most popular paths in the area, the one up Loughrigg Fell from the village of Ambleside
